January 12, 2014: South Georgia Godthul

Godthul (54o17’S, 36o18’W)

The original plan for this morning was to visit St. Andrews Bay, home to one of South Georgia’s largest king penguin rookeries, estimated at over 100,000 nesting pairs. Unfortunately, the area was temporarily closed due to reindeer hunting. Reindeers were introduced to South Georgia Island by whalers and sealers in early dates; however, they are destroying the natural habitats of penguins and seals. As such, programs are set up to eradicate reindeers in order to rehabilitate the penguin habitats. Reindeers are not the only animal that poses threat to penguins. The other one, also introduced by human activity, is rats.

Anyway, because St. Andrews Bay was closed, the plan B is to visit Godthul. Lying between Cumberland East Bay and Ocean Harbour, Godthul operated as a small land base supporting a floating whale factory site from 1908 to 1929. The name (meaning Good Hollow in Norwegian) was probably applied by the sealers and whalers working in the area. This morning we will take a zodiac tour of this scenic area for about an hour. There will be penguins and seals along the shore with some beautiful waterfalls. The zodiac cruise provides a different angle for photography. Instead of taking pictures ashore, photography from zodiac boats yields different perspectives.
