Heading to Buenos Aires

Antarctica has been on my bucket list of places to visit for a long time. After months of planning since April 2013, finally in January 2014 I embarked on a trip to Antarctica—the coldest, driest, windiest, loneliest, most remote and least known continent on earth.

To get there from Canada, I had to fly to the Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires first. It took me almost one day on planes and in airports (connecting flights).

From Grande Prairie to Buenos Aires – 21 hours
1.5 hours from Grande Prairie to Calgary (YYC)
2.0 hours in YYC airport connecting flights
4.0 hours from Calgary to Houston Texas (IAH)
3.0 hours in IAH airport connecting flights
10.5 hours from Houston to Buenos Aires (EZE)

From Buenos Aires back to Grande Prairie – 29.5 hours
10.5 hours from Buenos Aires to Houston (IAH)
10.0 hours in IAH airport connecting flights
4.5 hours from Houston to Edmonton (YEG)
3.5 hours in YEG airport connecting flights
1.0 hour from Edmonton to Grande Prairie

January 5, 2014: After a long flight, at last I arrived at Buenos Aires International Airport. The first word I could think of was HOT. It was so hot. Looking at those beauty banners hanging down from the ceiling seemed to make it even hotter (?). The airport doesn't have any air conditioning....oh my god! It's summer, man. So many passengers inside the airport and yet there wasn't any air conditioning.

January 5, 2014: At first glance, Buenos Aires isn't a pretty city. Buenos Aires is well known as the Paris of South America with many beautiful antique European architectures well preserved in its downtown core, but it also has many ugly high rises, unfinished apartments, and old houses in the surrounding suburbs.

Hotel Sofitel Buenos Aires

Upon arrival in Buenos Aires, we stayed in Sofitel hotel during the first night. The Sofitel is a charming hotel, located in a historic Art Deco building. Situated in one of the most elegant areas in the heart of the city, it is close to the shopping and financial districts.
